Gross-rosen started out as a sub-camp of Sachsenhausen, but it had become a full-fledged Nazi torture camp by 1941. By January of 1945, the camp had 97 satellite camps. Though it started out small, it became very big, very fast.
Prisoners of Gross-rosen
Of the estimated 125 thousand prisoners who lived in the camp, about 40 thousand died during their stay at this place of living hell. Gross-rosen also held one of the largest groups of female prisoners out of almost all the Nazis' deadly concentration camps. The prisoners were used for back-breaking work, usually in a nearby granite quarry.
Gross-rosen's Death Toll
It is estimated that around 40 thousand out of the camp's 120,000 prisoners died. Gas chambers were built on location by 1942, which were used for it's intended purpose. Specifically, many Soviet prisoners of war were killed at Gross-rosen, many of whom died of starvation.
