In the book Prisoner B-3087, the main character Yanek survives multiple concentration camps throughout WWII. Here are some facts about the first one he endures, Plaszow.
Plaszow was a concentration camp in Poland, and the primary center for Jews from Krakow. It was known for it's notorious commandant.
General Information About Plaszow
"I had known this day would come ... By the summer of 1942, only I remained ... I thought I'd be ready for it when they took me away, but I wasn't." -Prisoner B-3087
Plaszow was the first experience of concentration camps for a lot of the Jews who were taken there. Many were deported from the Krakow ghetto, such was the case of Yanek.
Plaszow was a forced labor camp. It was surrounded by barbed wire that was electrified day and night. The camp had several sections, and was enlarged many times. Jews and Poles were segregated within those sections. Thousands were killed there, mostly by shootings. It was a mass grave site, but most of the bodies were later burned before the camp was evacuated.
The Infamous Amon Goeth
"Amon Goeth wouldn't have his breakfast each day until he'd killed at least one Jew." -Prisoner B-3087
Amon Goeth was the Nazi commandent of Plaszow, who was known for his random killings of the prisoners of the camp. He would sit out on his balcony, listening to music, while working on his sharp-shooting skills using the prisoners of the camp as his targets. His highly trained dogs killed Jews for him, on command. It is said he had the dog handler killed because Goeth thought the dogs liked their handler better than him.
